The United States is proposing to make Kenya the first country in Africa to receive funding under the Chip and Science Act, underscoring the two countries’ commitment to strengthening their tech relationship.

President Joe Biden’s administration is working with Congress to provide Kenya with $1 million to support assembly, testing, and packaging in the semiconductor sector. The landmark $280 billion Chip and Science Act aims to support Kenya’s domestic chip industry with billions in subsidies and incentives.

During a meeting at the White House, Biden said the United States and Kenya are “embracing a new era of technology cooperation” that will span cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, clean energy, and chip manufacturing. “We need your help to strengthen the supply chains and industries of the future,” Biden added.

Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo discussed a new partnership with Kenya in semiconductors. The partnership, under the International Foundation for Technology Security and Innovation, aims to strengthen the security of global supply chains and complement American chip manufacturing.
